Arbutus menziesii or American strawberry tree (family Ericaceae). This species loves light and often grows on rocky Pacific shores or at the edges of forests, although it can also be found in the undergrowth. The irregular arrangement of the branches gives it a twisted, often sloping silhouette and an irregularly shaped, but very characteristic and often remarkable crown. Bright red bark peels naturally - Vancouver Island - British Columbia - Canada
