The Grand Duke is the largest raptor in our regions. Its Latin name is Bubo Bubo. At 75 cm high, the Great Horned Owl is the largest of the nocturnal raptors in Europe: it measures twice that of its congener, the Long-eared Owl. Described as "aristocratic", its silhouette is massive, its head, pricked by two large red-orange eyes, is surmounted by egrets of approximately 8 cm (normally horizontal and a little folded back), which the bird raises. vertically if excited or disturbed. Remember that these egrets play no role in hearing. The sexes are distinguished by the size of the smaller male (tiercelet). Mimetic to branches, its plumage is reddish-brown above, spotted and streaked with black-brown. The underside is paler, tan with longitudinal streaks and transverse stripes of dark brown color. The weight of the male varies from 2 to 2.5 kg, that of the female from 2.5 to 3.3 kg. 65 to 75 cm long, the eagle owl has a wingspan ranging from 160 to 188 cm4. It can live for more than 20 years. The eagle owl utters a "bouhou" or "ouhouhou-ou-ouhouhouhouhou" (hence its Latin name, Bubo bubo) audible from afar, as well as all kinds of other noises. It has an agile and silent flight despite its large size because it is endowed, like most nocturnals, with a downy plumage, very flexible, which allows it to fly quietly. In flight, it is easily recognizable by its large wingspan, leaning on its large, long and wide wings, clearly showing the rather pointed head and the short tail.
