In spite of the storm which fell on the track, the duo Ickx-Joest (n°9) will finish second of the final classification, not without difficulties. After 18 hours of racing, the Porsche 908/80 had a two-lap lead, but had to stop for half an hour. It and the Rondeau M379 B then fought for first place in the final moments. And it was Jean Rondeau's car, the only winner in history to be both driver and constructor (in association with the late Jean-Pierre Jaussaud), which won the race at the end of an unbridled race: twenty-nine changes of leader! Jacky Ickx, who had already won four times, would win the trophy again in 1981 and 1982.
