Les Sables-d'Olonne (Vendée), France, Sunday November 7, 2004: start of the 5th edition of the Vendée Globe 2004-2005, a non-stop single-handed sailing race around the world: the French skipper Jean Le Cam, 45 years, on his monohull sailboat Bonduelle 2. He will finish second for his first participation in 87 days, 17 hours, 20 minutes and 8 seconds. The sailing world calls him "Le Roi Jean" as he dominated his discipline in the 1990s. He does not like superlatives or compliments. His untidy mop, his face weathered with spray and his banter make him the archetypal Breton sailor. He belongs to the generation of autodidacts. Tough in pain, resistant to fatigue and impressive willpower. A regular in the Vendée Globe, he was crowned IMOCA world champion in 2015 and finished first in the Barcelona World Race. At 61, he has never left center stage. His exploits, his panache and his repartees make him the darling of the pontoons.
