Vittorio Gassman Prints

Born on 1 September 1922 to a German father and an Italian mother, Vittorio Gassman began his acting career at the age of 21. He made his acting debut in Preludio d'amore, a film by Giovanni Paolucci. This top debut earned him the headliner for 5 films the following year. Thanks to his youthful physique, he was especially solicited for different roles in adventure or cloak-and-dagger films. Speaking good English, Vittorio Gassman couldn't resist the call of Hollywood in the 50s. He shot four films there: "The Mystery of the Bayous", "The Frontiers of Life", "Sombrero" and "Rhapsody". On his return to Italy, he took part in a few films that would become international successes such as "Mambo", "La Belle des belles" and "Guerre et paix". Vittorio Gassman's career takes a new turn in the film "The Pigeon" by accepting a role at the antipodes of what he usually plays. For the first time, the actor shows a real potential in a comic acting. This film by Mario Monicelli was a great success. Vittorio Gassman then collaborated several times with a renowned director: Dino Risi. In 1974, he won the prize for Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival for his role in "Parfum de femme". A man of the theatre and cinema, Vittorio Gassman is said to be able to play anything. With nearly 70 films to his credit and some twenty plays to his credit, at the end of his life, the actor devoted more time to the latter, even if he still made a few screen appearances. He died in Rome on June 29, 2000.
