Description of the photograph

Matera is a town on a rocky outcrop of the Basilicata region in southern Italy. It includes the famous Sassi, a group of troglodyte dwellings carved on the mountainside. Evacuated in 1952 because of poor living conditions, the Sassi now house museums such as Casa Grotta di Vico Solitario, which contains period furniture and hand-crafted tools. The nearby rock churches include Santa Lucia alle Malve, adorned with 13th century frescoes, UNESCO World Heritage.
