After a degree in Portuguese, a certificate of cinematographic studies and a practical apprenticeship in the audio-visual laboratory directed by Jean Rouch at EPHE, he obtained his master's degree with the production of an ethnological film about the work of the last master sonnailleur of Portugal. Passionate about ethnology, he will also take classes at the Musée de l'Homme in Paris and seminars organized by Robert Jaulin in the framework of the EBU Ethnology and Anthropology of Paris VII. In 1982, he studied at Muséographie as part of the Ecomusée du Creusot, with a specialization on the ethnography of the working class related to the history of the industrial heritage. Then, back in Paris, alongside a professional work as a slide show director for a large company, he studied the possibilities of the photographic sequence as visual writing. From 1974 to 1978 he participated in the documentary adventure in Super 8 sound with a Beaulieu as part of a film workshop he directs. From 1982 to 1985 he worked as a director at the Roannais Ecomuseum in Super 8 and 16 mm. with the technical support of the Cinémathèque de Saint-Etienne.D In 1985 he obtained his DEA in Byzantine Art (EPHE Paris and Lyon II) From 1990 to 2000 he teaches Aesthetics of Photography within the framework of the UFR of Letters at the Stendhal University of Grenoble Currently he divides his time between photography and documentary cinema, the Drôme where he resides and India where he realizes numerous reports and documentary films. Author of about forty books of photographs, his images are often accompanied by texts written by his wife Anne da Costa. Many exhibitions reflect this common work. He is a member of Gamma -Rapho, Scope and Bios agencies.
