The Houses on the Agout River Along the Agout River, in the heart of the city, these pastel-colored houses have been, since the Middle Ages, the main place of activity of the Castres inhabitants. They were home to various trades such as tanners, dyers, parchment makers, paper makers and weavers. Today, they are part of the image of the city. Few are those who do not fall under the spell of their colors reflected in the river. Since 1990, many of them have been owned by the Office Public de l'Habitat and are therefore inhabited.
Castres has a diversified architectural, cultural and landscape heritage, located mainly in the city center, which is called "écusson". There are also half-timbered and corbelled houses. The city of Castres is committed to protecting its historic center.
