The Mothers of Invention was a rock and roll band of the 1970s. They primarily performed works by composer Frank Zappa, although other band members were sometimes credited. The band was originally called The Soul Giants and consisted of drummer Jimmy Carl Black, bassist Roy Estrada, saxophonist Davy Coronado, guitarist Ray Hunt, and vocalist Ray Collins. After Collins had a fight with Hunt in 1964, Hunt left the band and Frank Zappa took his place as guitarist, quickly becoming the band's leader.
